Our

story

Luca was born with the surprise encounter between a sports mad Brit and a technology obsessed Greek in early 2022. The common ground that binds all we do at Luca is a shared belief in the power of technology and innovation to lead to better health outcomes. We fundamentally believe that playing sport delivers untold physical, mental and social benefits, but that it must be made safer, especially with respect to head injuries.

With recent advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning, we now have an incredible opportunity to evolve concussion diagnosis and management from being almost entirely subjective to one that’s driven by data and hard science.

The

team

Nick Greenhalgh

CO-FOUNDER & CEO

Like many kids, Nick grew up utterly obsessed with sport. His obsession led him to playing professional rugby for Northampton Saints and whilst he’s a big advocate for the benefits of playing sport, he also has a personal understanding of the risks and pitfalls. Nick’s playing days were cut short due to injury, which meant he had to forge another path. After spending six years at a startup in London and then completing his MBA at the University of Oxford, Nick has found his purpose in supporting the welfare of athletes, an area that’s not always been at the top of sport’s priority list.

Vas Nikolaou

CO-FOUNDER & CTO

Vas is a serial tech entrepreneur, and has held board-level technology leadership roles in several healthtech startups. Vas works his magic from our Athens office where he heads up Luca’s dev team, and pays regular visits to our London HQ to collaborate primarily on strategy, product development and investment drives. He is passionate about the use of AI in health technology to improve clinical healthcare systems and overall patient outcomes and experience.

Oli Maunsell

Oli spent the first decade of his career founding, developing and exiting from two startups in events and marketing, before deciding to follow his childhood dream of becoming a doctor. He qualified from Newcastle University in 2012 and built up experience across a range of hospital specialities before establishing himself as a GP in Berkshire. Having always had a keen interest in sports medicine, Oli has worked as a doctor for Henley Rugby Club, Goodwood Racecourse and England Boxing, as well as having worked as a school doctor for Shiplake College and Wellington College.

He graduated from the University of Oxford with a first class degree in MBiol Biology in 2023 and has also represented Wales and Great Britain as an international hockey player. These experiences have contributed to his desire to work at the forefront of where sport and medical technology collide, recognising the profound importance of safe competition in sport.
